Abstract
Thorough preparation of the bowel is prerequisite to successful contrast studies of abdominal organs. For this purpose many cathartics including castor oil have been tried and used without real satisfaction. The present study has been undertaken to evaluate the effectiveness on bowel preparation of a new contact laxative-Bisacodyl for barium enema, intravenous urography and cholangiography.
Fourty consecutive cases each of barium enema and intravenous urography and 20 cases of intravenous cholangiography were subjected to the trial with Bisacodyl, and the scored results of bowel cleansing were compared with those obtained from the equal number of age-matched samples of each examination prepared with castor oil. Fifteen mg. of Bisacodyl was liven
the tablet form per orally in the evening before X-ray examination and Bisacodyl suppository 0250 rng) was inserted into the rectum 1 hour prior to examination. r
Effective bowel movement occurred regularly between 6 and 9 hours following the ingestion of. tablets.... Bisacodyl was more effective. than castor oil in obtaining a clean bowel and caused far less discomfort to the patient with almost no undesirable effects.. Bisacodyl appears superior to castor oil and is quite suitable for intravenous urography and cholangiography, but for the barium study of the colon the use of tablets should better be combined withtap-water cleansing enema.
